Single-colour glaze systems across full tonal spectrum. Technically demanding requiring precise kiln atmosphere and temperature control without polychrome decoration. Each colour family has distinct period associations.

Production Process

Monochrome glaze systems rely entirely on the glaze itself — its mineral composition, thickness, and the kiln's temperature and atmosphere during firing — to produce colour, with no painted or applied decoration involved. A copper-based glaze fired in reduction produces red; the same copper glaze fired in oxidation produces green. Iron content and its oxidation state shift a glaze between celadon greens, yellows, and browns. Cobalt produces blue at high concentration and a softer sky-blue at lower concentration. Because colour is a direct product of chemistry and firing conditions rather than surface application, there is no way to touch up or correct a monochrome glaze after firing — the kiln either produces the intended colour or it does not.

Historical Development

Monochrome glazes have a longer continuous history at Jingdezhen than any painted decorative system, running from Song-dynasty celadon through the codified imperial glaze colours of the Ming and Qing courts, where specific hues — sacrificial red, imperial yellow, sky-blue, tea-dust — were reserved for particular ritual or court functions. Each colour family carries its own period associations and its own firing difficulty, with some reds and blues counted among the hardest colours to produce reliably at any point in the kiln's history.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Quality is read in the evenness of colour across the full surface, the depth and clarity of the hue, and the glaze's behaviour at the piece's edges and footring, where thinning naturally occurs. Because there is no decoration to draw the eye elsewhere, a monochrome glaze has nowhere to hide unevenness or instability — the glaze itself is the entire argument the piece makes.
