The forms of Jingdezhen porcelain are not arbitrary shapes. They are canonical types — bowls, vases, plates, jars, teapots, censers, scholar objects — each with structural conventions refined across centuries. Form determines function, firing behaviour, and decorative possibility. A meiping is not a guanyin; a tianqiu is not a yuhuchun.
Form is the first discipline. Everything else follows from the shape.

For over a thousand years, Jingdezhen has been the principal centre of Chinese porcelain production. Each vessel form — from imperial court wares to the scholar's study implements — carries within it centuries of technical refinement and cultural convention. The forms gathered here represent the documented typologies of porcelain craft: shapes developed through ritual use, trade, literary culture, and the established requirements of Chinese daily life.
Organised into four currents — Imperial & Classical, Scholar & Literati, Export & Cross-Cultural, and Contemporary Studio — these vessel types trace the development of Jingdezhen production from the Song dynasty kilns through the workshops of today. Each form reflects a particular set of functional, ritual, and technical requirements accumulated over time.

These forms emerged from imperial commissions and the classical Chinese vessel tradition — bowls, cups, jars, vases, and ewers refined across dynasties from Song through Qing. Each carries the conventions of court use, ritual function, and the technical standards maintained by the imperial kilns.
