String-pattern Bands

Fine encircling lines around a vessel, whose name recalls the strings of a musical instrument.

String-pattern Bands

Origin

Xiánwén (弦纹), string-pattern bands, are fine lines that encircle a vessel. Their name recalls the strings of a musical instrument. Such lines arose naturally in the making of pottery, as incidental traces of the process, before they were adopted as deliberate decoration.

Effect

The bands give a form a restrained horizontal rhythm and draw attention to its circumference and proportion, without adding colour or imagery.

Meaning

In the maker’s interpretation, their continuous circles express completeness and the unceasing renewal of life.
