Connected through its rice-yellow glaze to the history of that glaze, first fired deliberately as a colour in its own right under Kangxi.
Motifs & Meaning
Maker & Place
This gaiwan combines a gentle rice-yellow glaze with xiánwén: encircling lines whose name recalls the strings of a musical instrument.
Such marks arose naturally through the making of pottery, beginning as incidental traces of the process before becoming deliberate decoration. Here, they articulate the vessel with a restrained horizontal rhythm, drawing attention to its circumference and proportion.
For the maker, their continuous circles express completeness and the unceasing renewal of life. The symbolism is carried by the form itself: a simple bowl, softly coloured, encircled by lines that return to where they began.
