Local Jingdezhen Clay

Local Jingdezhen Clay

The local and regional clay resources that formed part of Jingdezhen’s evolving porcelain-body recipes.

Jingdezhen porcelain was never based on a single uniform deposit. Workshops drew on different porcelain stones, kaolin-rich clays and related raw materials from Jingdezhen and its wider supply region.

Their composition, availability and preparation changed over time. That matters because the body beneath the glaze affects whiteness, translucency, firing strength, shrinkage and the way a finished object feels in the hand.

This page therefore treats “local clay” as a regional raw-material system rather than one fixed ceramic substance.
