Historical Context
The Xianfeng reign was devastated by the Taiping Rebellion, which reached Jingdezhen in the 1850s and resulted in the destruction of significant portions of the kiln infrastructure. Imperial porcelain production was severely interrupted for several years, and wares from the Xianfeng period are consequently among the rarest of any Qing reign.
The wares that survive from before the disruption follow Daoguang typologies; those produced after partial restoration show the constraints of reduced resources. Xianfeng is studied as a period of survival and interruption within the longer tradition.
