Modern Industrial Cobalt

Contemporary ceramic production can use processed cobalt colourants with far more consistent composition than historically mined ores.

This consistency allows studios to control colour more reliably from firing to firing. What it does not automatically provide is quality: brushwork, pigment concentration, glaze interaction and firing remain decisive.

Modern cobalt therefore belongs naturally within contemporary Jingdezhen practice, while remaining visually and materially distinct from historical cobalt sources such as Sumaliqing.
