黑釉
A deep, reflective black glaze, fired across China since ancient times and refined at Jingdezhen under Kangxi.
Technical Description
Black glazes have been fired across China’s ceramic regions since ancient times. At Jingdezhen, their development reached a high point during the Kangxi reign.
In the maker’s interpretation, black is xuán (玄): the profound colour of Heaven and Earth, carrying associations of dignity, stillness, restraint and depth.
Many historic dark glazes are coloured by iron; see Iron-Based Glazes for the material system. Blue Fir does not assume a specific recipe for an individual black glaze unless the maker describes it.
