Motifs & Meaning
Maker & Place
A softly luminous sweet-white glaze forms the ground of this tea bowl, evoking the clear light of a full moon. Small iron-brown speckles punctuate the surface like stars across the night sky.
The maker calls this finish Star-and-Moon. The white carries wishes for purity, completeness and tranquillity; the scattered stars suggest vitality and a life shining within its own sphere.
The form takes its cue from a flower in full bloom. Eight petals rise and fall around the mouth, while vertical ribs descend gently along the body and gather above a small, neatly defined ring foot.
Its character comes from three-dimensional line rather than an accumulation of ornament. Glaze, speckle and contour work together to create a restrained beauty that rewards continued looking.
