Historical Connections
A contemporary expression of the Ming–Qing Jingdezhen sky-blue glaze, itself developed in imitation of Song Ru ware.
Motifs & Meaning
Maker & Place
This Tianqing glaze continues a tradition developed by Jingdezhen’s imperial kilns during the Ming and Qing dynasties in imitation of the sky-blue glazes of Song-dynasty Ru ware. In the Jingdezhen interpretation, a small addition of cobalt helps bring out the blue. The Jingdezhen Taolu, or Records of Jingdezhen Ceramics, describes the colour of the imperial imitations as celadon with a blue lustre.
The maker carries this Ming and Qing glaze tradition forward through continued adjustment and refinement. The result is a contemporary expression of a historical colour, given room to unfold across the vase’s rounded, olive-shaped body.
Its full proportions convey serenity and harmony. In Chinese auspicious language, píng, the word for vase, echoes the word for peace. Placed on a desk as an object of contemplation or offered as a gift, it carries a quiet wish for peace and cultivated elegance.
