The Object

Sǎlán, or powder blue, was first developed at Jingdezhen’s imperial kilns during the Xuande reign of the Ming dynasty. Historically known as chuīqīng, “blown blue”, and also as “snowflake blue”, it is distinguished by irregular blue speckles scattered across the surface.

Following Xuande, production ceased for almost two centuries before the technique was revived under Kangxi and brought to new heights. This small meiping continues the Kangxi powder-blue tradition, pairing the textured blue surface with gilt decoration.

Blue provides depth; gold brings light. In the maker’s interpretation, their meeting carries wishes for prosperity and a home filled with precious things. The compact vase brings those associations into an intimate scale, suited to a desk, shelf or carefully composed interior.

The Form

Compact and high-shouldered, the vase holds a single stem or branch with ease, or stands alone as a quiet object of contemplation. The powder-blue glaze deepens in low light and lightens in direct sun, so its presence shifts through the day.
