Oxygen-reduced kiln atmosphere producing cobalt depth variation. Historical standard for high-quality blue-and-white.

Technique
Kiln atmosphere in which oxygen is deliberately reduced during firing by introducing fuel in excess of combustion requirements. Produces characteristic cobalt depth variation and subtle atmospheric surface effects. The standard firing method for high-quality blue-and-white production across the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods. The resulting depth of cobalt tone is a primary quality indicator in period assessment.
